Runners Knee (patella femoral pain)
Pain felt in front of your knee or around your kneecap. Pain can vary from a dull ache to very painful in one or both knees.
Several things can cause this but as it's an overuse injury it can be from running. It's caused because the knee cap is out of alignment so over time cartilage on the knee cap can wear down. Pain is worse when doing stairs, squatting jumping or after. Pain or stiffness in the knee is also a symptom after prolonged sitting.
Achilles Tendinitis or Tendinopathy
Caused by inflammation of the tension that connects your calf to your heel.
Dull pain in your lower leg, above the heel.
Heat and swelling along the Achilles tendon
Limited ability to flex foot towards your shin
Pain and stiffness in the morning and with activities
Important to seek treatment right away as this injury increases the risk of rupturing the Achilles tendon which requires surgery and months to fix.
Plantar Fasciitis
This is caused by inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes (called the plantar fascia).
Symptoms include pain at the midfoot or heel or a burning sensation at the bottom of your foot. Pain is often worse first thing in the morning or after prolonged activity.
Shin Splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
Pain that is felt in the front or inside of the lower leg along the shin bone (tibia) because of tissue inflammation around the tibia.
Muscle Pull or Strain
This is caused by a small tear in the muscle. Often caused by overstretching a muscle.
Most commonly occurs with hamstrings, quadriceps, calf muscles and groin.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)
The lliotibial band runs on the outside of the thigh from the top of the hip bone to the outside of the knee. ITBS occurs when this band thickens and rubs on the knee causing inflammation.
Hip/ Knee Bursitis
Asymmetrical biomechanics or movement patterns can lead to increased friction of the bursa (fluid filled sacs that cushion your joints).
This results in inflammation and swelling of the bursa. This commonly occurs at the hip or knee causing a dull achy pain at either of these joints.
Stress Fracture
This is caused when a hairline crack forms in the bone because of repetitive stress or impact.
These injuries result in pain that gets worse over time, as the pain progresses it may be felt even when at rest. Pain is most commonly at the top of the foot, heel or lower leg although can occur at the thigh or pelvis.
There is also swelling, bruising or tenderness in the area of the fracture.
Can be caused by not maintaining or having correct running shoes and running on very hard surfaces.
Sprained Ankle
When ligaments around the ankle are stretched or torn. Often happens when the foot twists or rolls inward.
Common Triggers for Injuries
Weak Muscles (glutes, thigh and hip muscles)
Tight Muscles (e.g. hamstrings and quadriceps)
Foot issues (flat feet or very high arches)
Change in running shoes or running surface
Overused running shoes (should be replaced every 400-600 miles)
Incorrect type of running shoes for your biomechanical presentation (if your feet have a tendency to pronate or supinate)
Incorrect running technique
Increasing your mileage too quickly
Transitioning from treadmill to outdoor running too quickly

The Bowen Technique improves your performance, aids recovery, treats your injuries and even reduces your risk of future injuries!
It involves gentle rolling movements to loosen fascia and muscles. It puts your body into a state of relaxation, restoration and repair.
It dampens pain responses, reducing the trauma of recent or long term injuries.
With all these injuries it is best to come for treatment straight away as the sooner it is treated the better. Don't ignore the warning signs that your body is giving you!
Using the Bowen technique immediately following an injury can bypass traumatic reactions such as swelling and inflammation. Early treatment mobilises, energises and improves circulation to the problem area. This promotes the flow of blood and lymph, keeps the body moving as it should reduces pain, and speeds up recovery time.
I would love to help you get back to your active self as soon as possible so book in now!
